AI SEO for Small Business How to Get Found in 2020s

Small businesses can optimize for AI SEO by focusing on conversational search, structured data, building authority and trust, providing direct answers, and building a cross-reference source chain. For more than three decades, traditional search has served as a worldwide library of resources, ranging from Wikipedia to independent websites. Today, AI models like Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, and other large language models (LLMs) are summarizing queries and FAQs into informative answers.

With that in mind, businesses are trying to adapt, but many do not know where to start. In this article, we will cover the groundwork for AI SEO for small businesses and the best practices that can help you grow digitally.

1) Keep Your Content Conversational

keep your content conversational

Conversational writing in SEO is the practice of creating content that mimics natural human speech and directly answers questions. Write like you are explaining something to a colleague or friend. Your content is more likely to appear in AI platforms when it provides clear context, direct answers, and natural language.

Instead of typing “Chicago’s best deep-dish pizza,” users may ask an LLM, “Where is the best place to get deep-dish pizza in Chicago?” As AI continues to advance, retrieving information is becoming easier, and users do not always need to scroll through every organic listing on Google.

However, content that still ranks on the first page of Google but does not appear in AI platforms like AI Mode or AI Overviews may see clicks and traffic drop significantly. When was the last time you visited the second page of Google’s organic listings to find an answer? Most likely, you are using AI Overviews or AI Mode as a trusted answer source, so you do not need to keep scrolling through Google’s organic results.

FAQ: Should You Use AI to Write Content?

Typically, you should write your own content rather than rely on LLMs or AI to write it for you. Although AI continues to grow, it does not create content the same way humans do. AI tools analyze large amounts of text data and predict the most likely sequence of words based on patterns.

AI also does not have personal memories, feelings, or true intent behind its responses. However, you can still use AI to check spelling, grammar, and clarity. I wrote this content myself, but I use AI to improve grammar and spelling so the final version sounds polished and accurate.

2) Maintain Structure Data for Machines

Use clearly written H2 and H3 headlines that are easy for machines to interpret. Bullet points and descriptive headings can help machines find your content for specific queries. Google uses structured data and schema markup to better understand website content, and you can easily run a test to see which schema markups appear on your blog or website pages.

Depending on the type of blog or website you operate, it is best to keep your structured data updated so AI bots can comprehend and display your results on AI platforms. It is also important to note that some schema markups can become obsolete, such as Google dropping FAQ rich results from search. However, that does not necessarily mean you should remove FAQs from your pages, because they can still be informative for users and AI bots.

3)Built Authority and Trust

built authority and trust

Google’s guidelines for ranking in Search are centered on Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (E-E-A-T). Creating content written by people who actually use the product, live the experience, or provide the service can help build credibility.

To build authority and trust, your business should maintain an up-to-date Google Business Profile, cite reliable primary sources, keep content fresh and updated, and ensure author bios highlight subject matter expertise, knowledge, and relevant experience.

Building backlinks with rich content becomes easier when your articles, news, product categories, or videos are shared across social media and other websites. Think of your content as the go-to source for information on a subject people want to visit, read, and share.

4) Provide Direct Answers

provide direct answers

Much like large language models, your content needs to answer questions directly. You can use a numbered list, bullet list, or infographic to support your answer. Direct answers should appear immediately after headings, such as H1, H2, and H3 tags, as well as within FAQs. This helps signal to AI bots which answer your content is trying to provide.

In many cases, your answer may be referenced by AI platforms, and your website could be cited as the source. Avoid using filler text, as AI often skips it and bots typically look for factual and verifiable claims. Sometimes, AI tools will look at Reddit forums to find hard data, so it’s also helpful to use specific information in your business content, such as: “We operate in these five metro cities,” or “Our service takes no more than 30 minutes.”

5) Built a Cross-Reference Source Chain

built a cross-reference source chain

AI engines look for validation across the web before recommending your small local business. To help AI platforms recognize and trust your business, mention your website across third-party platforms, local directories, industry websites, review sites, and Google Search partners.

You should also be active on Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Google Maps, Yelp, local news blogs, and Reddit threads. Google and Facebook reviews are excellent cross-reference sources that AI can pull from because they connect your business with verified reviews.
